#EndSARS protest: Four years after, Nigerians remember, pray for victims

Some Nigerians have taken to social media to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS protest across the country, especially the Lekki Toll gate incident of October 20, 2020, in Lagos.

The #EndSARS movement emerged as a unified call for justice and an end to police brutality in Nigeria.

To honour the memory of the victims, Nigerians on Sunday took to X to remember and pray for those who lost their lives.

Marking the protest’s fourth anniversary, popular skit maker, MrMacaroni tweeted, “I am dedicating this Year’s EndSars Anniversary to Pelumi Onifade; a young promising journalist who was arrested and killed in detention for recording the video of a Nigerian Politician shooting at EndSars Protesters.

Four years later, Justice has not been served in the matter of Pelumi Onifade. The Lagos State Government has also refused to release his body to his family. This injustice must come to an end!!!”

Another user, @Tunnykvng tweeted, “20th October, 2020. It’s been 4 years already! May the souls of the departed continue to rest in peace.”

@FNwabuwe wrote, “I remember that day like yesterday, many of whom went out that day never got back home, in a bid to make their voices known against the terrible conditions of living .. May those who lost their lives rest in peace. 20.10.2020.”

“Four years on, it’s heartbreaking that we still face brutality from those meant to protect us. On this day, we remember the victims of the End SARS protests.” @itzbasito tweeted.

@Bolarhhh wrote, “Today, we honor the brave souls who stood against injustice and lost their lives during the protests. Their courage sparked a movement for change, and their legacy lives on in our fight for a better Nigeria. Gone, but never forgotten.”

The #EndSARS protests of 2020 were marked by unprecedented youth mobilisation, drawing global attention and support. However, the movement was marred by violence, especially during the Lekki Tollgate shooting on the night of 20 October 2020.
