Despite warnings by the Oyo State Police Command against any form of demonstration, scores of protesters, on Wednesday stormed major streets in Ibadan, Oyo State capital to protest in commemoration of one year anniversary of #EndSARS protests.
It is recalled that thousands of youths had on October 20, 2021, trooped out in almost all the states in the country to protest against Police brutality and human rights abuse, a development, which snowballed into loss of lives and destruction of properties, including public infrastructures.
During last year protest, no fewer than five police officers were killed by hoodlums in Ibadan, while Police stations were razed.
However, the Oyo State police command, on Tuesday, warned the protesters not to organise the protest in marking one year anniversary of the protests.
Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, advised parents and guardians not to allow their children to take part in the protest.
But, the protesters, who dared the Police matched through major streets and neighbourhoods in Ibadan, most especially Iwo Road, Agodi around 9.15 am and later converged on the roundabout at the frontage of the Oyo State government secretariat.
Meanwhile, detachments of heavily armed anti-riot policemen were stationed at strategic areas, including Mokola Roundabout, Sango, University of Ibadan, Agbowo junction, Dugbe and Oyo State Secretariat to prevent the breakdown of law and order.
Similarly, some supporters of the embattled Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Ighoho, currently standing trial in the Republic of Benin also joined the protest.
Some of the protesting youths who addressed journalists demanded the unconditional release of protesters arrested during last year #EndSARS demonstration and Sunday Ighoho.
