A journalist attached with Daily Post online publication in Osun State, Sikiru Obarayese was on Wednesday arraigned at the Osogbo magistrate court sitting in Osogbo, the state capital for covering the first year anniversary of EndSARS protest in the state.
Obarayese was performing his lawful duty when he was bundled into a stationed police vehicle and was mercilessly beaten by the police officers.
In the process, he was brutally injured on his knees by the police officers.
Meanwhile, youths trooped out in their numbers on Wednesday in Osogbo to mark the one year anniversary of EndSARS protest in the state.
The protesters who mobilised and organised themselves into a formidable group carried placards with different inscriptions that read, “It is the time to end bad governance in Nigeria,” “We are tired of nepotism, sectionalism and favouritism being displayed by the current administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari,” among many others.
The youths marched round the Ita-Olokan area in Osogbo singing anti-government songs.
Speaking with newsmen, one of the protesters who identified himself as Adebisi Hakeem, described marking the anniversary as a necessity to appreciate their fallen heroes who fought for reforms in the country.
He, however, maintained that the outburst of the police in the state cannot stop them from exercising their civic rights.
Meanwhile, another group under the aegis of Osun Civil Society Movement ruled out street protests to mark the anniversary of last year’s EndSARS nationwide protests.
One of the group leaders, Ayo Ologun, made this known at a programme held at an event centre in Osogbo to mark the anniversary.
He said, “We are doing this to commemorate the anniversary and after that, there will be a candlelight procession within the premises. We are not holding street demonstrations or protests.
“It is a constitutional right of anybody to protest so if any youths embark on street protest today they have police to deal with. At our own programme, what we will do is to dialogue on #EndSARS issues, lessons learnt and the regrets.”
