Youth have continued with the protest on the second day of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest in some parts of Dutse, the capital city of Jigawa State, despite the 24-hour curfew imposed by the state governor, Malam Umar Namadi, on Thursday night.
Reports from the state indicate that protesters blocked the Kano-Dutse-Maiduguri highway in Shawarin, a satellite town in Dutse, on the second day of the protest. As of the time of filing this report, combined security personnel from various agencies are battling with protesters around the Zai area of the city to prevent them from reaching the commercial area and other major public buildings and stores.
According to one of the residents of Zai quarters, thousands of youth, chanting different slogans, including calls for military intervention, have resisted the teargas thrown by the security forces to disperse them. In the Shuwarin area on the outskirts of Dutse, thousands of youth have regrouped and continued their demonstration for the second day.
The protesters attempting to enter the state capital are being blocked by heavy security, who have barricaded the road and heavily teargassed the area. An eyewitness in Shuwarin confirmed that numerous youths, including underage boys, were arrested by the police.
In Gumel town, the situation remains relatively calm as security forces block all major roads to prevent protesters from regrouping. However, according to our source in the town, the situation is very volatile, as the number of security personnel may not be enough to contain the youth for a long period of time.
Attempts to reach sources in other places like Hadejia, Birnin Kudu, Jahun, and Kazaure proved abortive due to terrible communication network issues around those areas.
