Emmy Awards: Game of Thrones retains position as highest nominated TV series for 8 years

Regarded as the most influential drama series ever to hit the television, Game of Thrones, an American fantasy drama series based upon George R. R. martin’s novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire, again dominated the nomination table of the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards.

This is making it the 8th time the HBO creation is sweeping major mentions at the PrimeTime Emmy Awards since the series took off to date.

Netting an over all 22 nominations across all categories, including the Outstanding Drama series, a category it has retained  for eight years consecutively, the fan favourite has two  Supporting Actors in a Drama Series mentions in contention as well as a Supporting Actress in a Drama series category.

The series has received about 132 Primetime Emmy Award nominations with 38 wins since inception to date, but Peter Dinklage is the most awarded member of the cast with recognition as Best Supporting Actor in a Series.

This year, he will be hoping to maintain the Supporting Actor in a Drama awards, which is keenly contested by a co-actor, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau for their excellent season 8 performances. In addition, cast members, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Maisie Williams, Diana Rigg, and Max von Sydow received Primetime Emmy Award nominations for their performances in the series.

Other series like This is Us, The Americans, The Handmaid’s Tale and Westworld had considerable impact on the nomination slate, with Westworld closing up behind Game of Thrones with 21 nominations across all categories.

The ceremony will be held on September 17, 2018, at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California, and will be broadcast in the U.S. by NBC and on Channel 101 DSTv from 1am with a repeat broadcast same day at 8pm.

This means M-Net’s Tuesday Prime time line-up will change: The Blacklist, Animal Kingdom and Strike Back will be off air to accommodate the prestigious awards show.

This year’s hosts are Michael Che and Colin.
