A 48-year-electrician, Adeniyi Akinbanjo, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a man of N1. 45 million under the pretext of selling three 100 kV generators to him.

The accused, a resident of No. 4, Olaosebikan Ayibitti, Mile 12 in Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of false pretences and stealing.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah told the court that the accused collected N1. 45 million from the complainant, Mr Lawrence Nwaeze, with a promise to sell to him three 100 kV generators but ran away with the money for two years.

He alleged that the accused committed the offences on May 11, 2016, at 11.00 a. m. at No. 25, Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun in Ikeja.

“The accused collected the sum of N1. 45 million from the complainant and his partner with a promise to sell to them three 100 kV generators but collected the money and diverted it to his  use.”

The offences violated Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, in his ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government, he said.

Fashola adjourned the case until May 28 for hearing.
