Electoral Act: Adamant APC governors in crucial meeting

Published by

Governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress are meeting tonight at the Kebbi state Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro Abuja.

A party source privy to the meeting told Nigerian Tribune that the governors are unrelenting in their opposition to the adoption of the Direct Primaries option for the emergence of parties candidates by the National Assembly in the Electoral Act 2021 passed by both chambers of Parliament.

Senior Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly (Senate) Senator Babajide Omoworare last Friday dropped the hint that the Bill had been sent to President Muhammadu Buhari for his presidential assent.

Checks revealed that a meeting brokered by Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo between the governors and the leadership of the National Assembly last week ended in a deadlock as both camps refused to yield grounds.

The APC Governors led by Kebbi state governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu are insisting on the retention of the existing provisions of direct, indirect and consensus options in the APC 2014 Constitution, ( as amended) as against the direct option passed by the National Assembly.

In attendance at the meeting are Abdullahi Sule, Yahaya Bello, Babagana Zulum, Bello Maisari, Abubakar Sani Bello, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, Simon Lalong and Dapo Abiodun, governors of Nasarawa, Kogi, Kebbi, Borno, Katsina,  Niger, Kwara, Plateau, Ogun states, respectively.

Others are Governor Babatunde Sanwoolu, Hope Uzodimma, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Kayode Fayemi, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Dave Umahi and Bello Muhammad Matawalle, governors of Lagos, Imo, Kano, Ekiti, Jigawa, Ebonyi and  Zamfara states. Others are Yobe state governor and Chairman APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Mai Mala Buni; his   Cross River State counterpart,  Ben Ayade and Gombe State governor, Inuwa Yahaya.
