Images and new details about the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake have leaked online, just days before its expected release. Microsoft and Bethesda have not officially announced the game, but multiple reliable sources say it’s coming next week, starting April 21.

This has been rumored for a while by insiders like NatetheHate and VGC. Now, journalist Jeff Grubb has confirmed it too.
“Other people have said but I’ve got separate confirmation that’s going to be the case,” Grubb said.
The remake is being developed by Virtuos and runs on Unreal Engine 5. This isn’t just a remaster with some polish—it’s a full remake. Screenshots of the game were accidentally leaked on a now-private page on Virtuos’ website.
“It looks really good!” one report noted, adding that this could be one of the biggest game launches of the year, whether it’s a surprise release or not.
News of the Oblivion remake first came out in 2023, when internal Microsoft documents were released during the company’s court battle to acquire Activision. Back then, the release was planned for fiscal year 2022, but it was delayed. Since then, there’s been no official announcement, leading to rumors of a “shadow drop.”
In March 2024, a former Virtuos employee shared details about gameplay updates made to improve the game for modern players. That’s also when reports suggested the release would happen “by June.”
“It is now next month, and yes, it’s happening,” VGC said.
The remake is expected to include several changes:
HUD – “Meant to be easier to understand for new players”
Stamina – “Meant to be less frustrating and for players to be knocked down less when its depleted”
Hit Reactions – “Meant to improve combat on both the player and enemy side”
Blocking – “Meant to be ‘inspired by Souls-like games’”
Sneaking – “Meant to have sneak icons more highlighted”
Archery – “Meant to make it ‘modern’ for third and first person play (Stealth Archer, here we come).”
Some fans are wondering why such a major release is being handled with so little promotion. Shadow drops can be exciting, like the one used for Hi-Fi Rush, but this game has been in the spotlight for years.
