Ekiti: PDP crisis delays scheduled congresses amid national secretary dispute

Following the current crisis rocking the National Working Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over the position of the national secretary, the scheduled congresses of the party in Ekiti State have been postponed.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the exercise, which was earlier fixed to commence with the ward congress this weekend, February 8, has been put on hold over the lingering crisis on who is the legitimate national secretary of the party between Sunday Ude-Okoye and Samuel Anyanwu.

Although organs of the party, like the Governors’ Forum and the Board of Trustees, have intervened in the impasse, the issue has not been sufficiently resolved.

Investigations revealed that the party is expected to send a letter signed by the national chairman and the secretary to the Independent National Electoral Commission notifying the commission of the dates of the congresses 21 days earlier in line with the 2022 Electoral Act.

To avoid the congresses being nullified by the judiciary, the party decided to postpone the exercise pending when the issues relating to the position of the secretary are resolved.

A senior member of the party said, “You know we have been waiting for these congresses since last year and the issue of the national secretary is the one making us postpone the exercise this time around.

“We don’t want to go ahead and later a court will say the wrong person signed the letter we forwarded to INEC; so it is better we exercise more patience for all these issues to be decided.”

Confirming the development to Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday, the chairman of the caretaker committee of Ekiti PDP, Chief Dare Adeleke, said, “Regrettably, after careful consideration, we are constrained to postpone our congresses due to lingering issues at the national level.”

He added, “I want to thank our leaders who have shown concern and worked closely with us to address these issues. Your support and cooperation are invaluable to our party’s progress.

“I assure you that we are working tirelessly to resolve these issues and chart a clear path forward.

“To our members, I urge you not to be deterred by these setbacks. Instead, let us remain determined, focused, and committed to our shared vision. We will overcome these challenges and emerge stronger.”
