Ekiti govt to residents: Stop dumping refuse, building structures on waterways

Published by

Ekiti State government has called on the residents of the state to desist from the act of dumping refuse and building structures on the waterways to avert flooding.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Works & Transportation, Mrs Funmi Ogun, who, following the directive of Governor Ayodele Fayose, visited flood prone areas of Adere and Omisanjana 132kv areas of Ado-Ekiti to assess the level of damage done due to flood.

Mrs Ogun said that the state government would take urgent steps to cushion the effects of the flood and safeguard the lives of the citizens, stressing that channelisation and drainage works would soon be put in place to pave way for the free-flow of water in the affected areas.

She appealed to the people to always consult relevant authorities concerned in building residential houses and shops, saying that some of these structures, if not properly built, do hinder the free passage of water as some structures in the affected areas were built on the waterways.

The Commissioner for works also visited the construction site of the new Oja-Oba market in Ado, where she urged the contractors to ensure the use of standard materials and maintain the structural plan of the modern market edifice as approved by the state government.

Some of the residents of Adere and Omisanjana 132kv areas who spoke on the flood incident, included Mrs Aderonke Safe Adewumi and Mr Damilola Ilori, thanked the state government for the quick response and called for the expansion of the bridge at Adere, noting that the existing bridge could no longer pave-way for the free flow of water in the area whenever there was heavy rainfall.
