Ekiti govt raises alarm over alleged cases of rape in secondary schools

The Ekiti State Government has expressed worry over reported cases of alleged sexual harassment of students by teachers across secondary schools in the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Folusho Daramola, in a statement on Sunday, said the government had commenced investigations into the allegations, adding that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance to the law of the land.

According to him, “The attention of the Hon Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, has been drawn to reports of sexual harassment, and cases of rape in some secondary schools in the State.

“The Ministry wants to assure the general public, that investigations have commenced into the allegations in conjunction with the Office of the Attorney General. At the end of the investigations, those found culpable shall be dealt with in accordance with extant regulations.

“Proven cases of criminality shall be handed over to the appropriate authorities, for prosecution in line with the laws of the land.”

Daramola while describing the act as unwholesome, he noted that the administration of Dr Kayode Fayemi would continue to ensure the protection of girl child in the state.

“Meanwhile, the general public is hereby assured of the Dr Kayode Fayemi-led administration’s commitment to child rights protection, especially the girl child. This applies not only within the confines of our educational institutions but in all the nooks and crannies of Ekiti State. Ekiti State Government will continue to do all within its means, to ensure security and protection of the girl child.

“We will also not hesitate to bring paedophiles and child molesters to book, whenever they are apprehended,” he said.
