The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to police personnel across the country against the persistent practice of unlawful detention of civilians, stressing the importance of respecting the fundamental rights of citizens, particularly in the context of pre-trial detentions.
This was contained in a statement released in Abuja on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
According to the statement, the IGP emphasised that compliance with legally stipulated detention periods is not only a constitutional requirement but also a key component in preserving the dignity and liberty of individuals, as guaranteed under Sections 34 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The IGP cautions against any practices that may lead to unlawful or prolonged detentions, which can undermine public trust and confidence in the police,” the statement noted. It added that any officer found to be in breach of these principles would face strict disciplinary action.

Calling for a culture of accountability within the Force, the IGP urged all officers to maintain the highest standards of conduct in their dealings with members of the public.
“By prioritising human rights, the Nigeria Police Force aims to build stronger relationships with the communities it serves, ensuring that policing is conducted with integrity and respect,” the statement further read.
The police leadership reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all individuals in custody are treated lawfully and with respect, noting that this reflects the broader vision of a police force that is not only effective in maintaining law and order but also firmly rooted in the protection of citizens’ rights and dignity.
