Effective criticism (i)

“If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept correction, you will be honored.” Proverbs 13:18

As we journey through life we will need to be corrected and we will have to correct others. Correction can be positive and it can be negative. It can have positive results and also have negative consequences.

“There are three main types of criticism: destructive, constructive, and instructive. Destructive criticism tears down; constructive criticism builds together, it identifies a problem and offers solutions. Instructive criticism adds to what someone knows.

Destructive criticism is the kind of criticism that cruelly asks, “Why did you do that” in a way that makes it clear that should not have been done. It is often associated with insults and cutting remarks. Such criticism is not meant to help. It only serves to tear down. And in doing so, it gives a feeling of smug superiority.

Constructive criticism is the kind that identifies a problem and offers solutions. It should be descriptive without being judgmental of the person. (The judgment is reserved for the action.) This is the kind that we most often ask for and the kind that we are often encouraged to give to others. Constructive criticism opens the door for communication and understanding without passing judgment.” Alex Valencic

The Bible is a complete book that provides, among other things, practical wisdom on effective living.

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” 2 Timothy 3.16-17 NLT

“Moral dropouts won’t listen to their elders; welcoming correction is a mark of good sense.” Proverbs 15.5 Message

We must be humble to receive constructive criticism and be bold, tactful, and wise in constructively criticising others.
