Your Life counts

Effective communication part (2)

Published by

Last time we began looking at the issue of effective communication. Communication is a major key to doing anything in life. As human being communication is critical. We saw the fact that the task of acquiring effective communication skills is entirely our own personal responsibility. We must do all we can to be effective communicators if our lives will count.

There are some tell-tale signs of ineffective communication which one must identity and deal with.

Misunderstanding is an obvious sign of ineffective communication. Misunderstanding is a breakdown of communication process where comprehension of the communicated message is either comprehended incorrectly or it is incorrectly interpreted. This happens when information or the content of the communication is misconstrued, misconceived or misinterpreted. Whenever we encounter misunderstanding we need to look inwards to see where our communication is faulty instead of pointing accusing fingers at the person/persons we communicate to.

Disinterest by the person we are communicating to is also a sign we are defective in getting our message across. This could be that we are either boring or irrelevant.

The quality of our communication will determine the quality of help/resources we are able to harness. It will determine the quality and caliber of people who will partner or work with us in any project. Most times, inadequate help is the result of ineffective communication. Effective communication is indispensible if we are to lead people successfully.

“If open communication within a workplace is encouraged, a more cohesive and effective team will emerge. Good communication within a team also tends to boost employee morale. When employees feel that they are well informed of the company’s direction and vision, they will feel more secure within their role. Regular internal communication can also lead to an improved work ethic if staff are reminded of achievements and feel that they are working towards a common goal.” Laura Hutton

Communication to be effective must be clear – the content must be visibly discernable by the audience. Also for communication to be effective it must be relevant – people will hardly every listen to what they think is irrelevant. The method and means of communication must be appropriate.

“The manner in which you go about conveying your ideas must appeal to your target audience and keep them engaged. Choose an approach that compliments your idea and does not overpower it. Whether it be a written, audio, or graphic presentation of your thoughts, your channel of communication must effectively deliver the core idea that is clearly understood.” Nick Perrin

The environment is which communication takes place is critical to whether communication will be hindered or not. If the right thing is said at the wrong place and at the wrong time such communication stands the risk of being ineffective.  Sometimes the best place to communicate is in public and at other times it is in private.

If our lives will count we have no choice but to acquire skills in effective communication.
