Effect of inflation on women’s health

Many women today have health challenges including mental health issues due to rise in inflation, that is rise in prices of products, including rent, groceries, and fuel which has led to grave uncertainty for individuals and families living on the margins.

And while many families now live with anxiety caused by rising prices, experts say that women are feeling it more acutely as a result of a combination of factors;  gender imbalance in household duties, financial insecurity and increase in childcare costs among other factors which have impacted acute, women’s mental wellbeing.

The stress of financial insecurity and burden takes a toll on the mental health.

While prices of commodities rise across board, workers’ wages have remained static. And because married women shoulder more of the responsibility for grocery shopping and cooking than their husbands, they are more exposed to the grim reality and are more affected by inflation-induced anxiety.

For women, high inflation exacerbates an already uneven economic situation while the gender pay gap continues to worsen an already precarious situation for them.

How can Inflation trends impact women? Inflation trend affects women in diverse ways; gendered expectations, like being responsible for a disproportionate share of household shopping, mean that women spend more time in stores where they are exposed to sharp variations in prices and feel the stresses of inflation more acutely.

Also, women spend a significant amount of their income on non-durable household goods,  such as food and toilet paper, which are particularly impacted by current trends; the cost of sanity pads keeps jumping up alongside  rising prices of women’s and girls’ clothing relative to men’s and boys’.

It has been established that inflation negatively affects people living on a fixed income more, especially those who are in debt. The lower income of many women is unable to match with the effects of rising inflation, leaving women less secure in the long run.

To protect women’s health, it is important to counter the cost-of-living crisis; civil society can help to raise awareness by raising awareness, campaigning on childcare reform, and supporting women.
