EFCC recovers N303 million, $7,000, cars from fraudsters

In its determination to tackle the rising cases of criminal activities in the country, the Benin zone of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered over N303 million from scammers in the last one year, the zonal director, Mr Hamisu Danmusa has disclosed.

Danmusa who spoke with journalists in Benin yesterday said that over $7,000, 14 exotic cars, ten laptops and 28 mobile phones were also recovered from the advance fee fraudsters.

He said that a total of 132 cases out of the 1,246 petitions investigated were forwarded to the police and other sister agencies as the matters raised in the petitions were not within the jurisdiction of the anti-graft agency.

He noted that 125 cases were filed in court while 88 convictions were secured, adding that the agency also secured the final forfeiture of a 4-bedroom bungalow at Ughelli and a petroleum filling station at Udu, Delta State.

Out of the money recovered, he disclosed that over N274 million was restituted to the victims of the come who are both Nigerians and foreigners.

He said that as part of its strategic plans to nip corruption in the bud and ensure a corrupt-free nation in the nearest future, it embarked on aggressive sensitization and enlightenment campaign to secondary schools and tertiary institutions across the three states that are within it coverage area of Edo, Delta and Ondo States.

Danmusa lamented that the major problem confronting the commission is the victims who write to withdraw the case immediately after they recover their money.

He said: “The victims do not help the matter. When the cases are charged to court, they refused to come to court during prosecution. They write to the commission immediately they are given their money. In such an instance, prosecution becomes difficult.”
