‘EFCC not investigating Betta Edu for N30 billion’

Published by

The suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, has refuted rumors suggesting she is under investigation for alleged misappropriation of N30 billion by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement issued by her Special Adviser on Media, Rasheed Olarenwaju, on Monday, it was emphasised that the EFCC had issued a clarification on the matter to dispel misconceptions and misinformation circulating on social media platforms.

The statement clarified that Edu is not connected to any scrutiny related to funds transferred to 50 bank accounts, as some had erroneously claimed.

Zubair, an investigator within the EFCC, elucidated the distinction between Edu’s case and that of another individual, Halima Shehu, who is indeed under investigation for misappropriating N44.8 billion without any official approvals. He stressed the importance of discerning fact from fiction and urged the public to refrain from participating in what appears to be a coordinated effort to discredit Edu through a media campaign of calumny.

The investigator also pointed out the misinformation being circulated, particularly referencing outdated news reports from six weeks ago, which do not accurately reflect the current status of the investigation.

The statement highlighted the significance of transparency and accuracy in such matters, especially concerning individuals in public positions, underscoring the importance of verifying information before accepting it as truth, particularly in an era where misinformation can spread rapidly across various social media platforms.

“As the investigation progresses, it is essential to await further updates from credible sources and to refrain from spreading unverified claims that may tarnish the reputations of individuals unjustly,” the statement concludes.
