Gombe: EFCC arrests commandant of Nigerian Peace Corps

Published by
GOMBE zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has arrested one Ambore Enoch, Gombe State Commandant of the Nigerian Peace Corps, for alleged financial impropriety  bordering on employment scam and extortion of money from the general public in the State under the pretext of offering them appointments into the organisation and provision of training kits amounting to the sum of N54m.

This was contained in a press statement signed and made available to Journalists in Gombe by the Public Relations Officer of the Commission, Bello Adamu Bajoga on Wednesday stating that the arrest was prompted following a petition was written by some aggrieved members of the Corps in the Gombe State Command after which operatives of the Commission did preliminary investigations before inviting the State Commandant for questioning.

The statement further contained that it was on that strength that in the interim, the investigation into the case revealed that the victims (mostly youths of Gombe State) were deceived to pay various sums  of money ranging from N3,000) to N60,000 into the Corps account domiciled in one of the new generation Banks amounting to the tune of NN54,000,000.00, this  happened sometime between December 2016 to March 2017.

In the meantime, it was discovered that out of the money realised from the Corps account, the Commandant allegedly withdrew the sum of N3.5m for personal use, just as he also transferred the sum of N20,000,000.00 into his personal account and remitted the sum of N18.7m into the Nigerian Peace Corps account at the Headquarters in Abuja.

Other withdrawals according to the EFCC were done by individuals under the instruction of the Commandant which appears suspicious.

Investigations into the matter are still ongoing while the suspect will be charged to court as soon as the investigations were concluded, the statement further contained.
