EEDC gives reason for lack of constant electricity in Anambra

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has reacted to a publication accusing it of its inability to handle power distribution in Anambra State.

A press statement by the management of the company also reacted to allegations that the state government paid the sum of N100 billion to it.

The company said: “The story trending across social media is loaded with false and unfounded information, all in a bid to smear the reputation of EEDC and pitch its esteemed customers against the organisation.”

Clarifying the drop in power supply in Anambra, the company said: “EEDC is a distribution company, with a licence only to distribute electricity.

“EEDC does not generate electricity, neither does it transmit electricity, but only distributes that which is generated and transmitted to it. It will therefore be unfair to blame EEDC of not providing adequate electricity in the South East, a situation that is totally beyond its control.

“EEDC can only distribute what it gets from the national grid based on its allocation, which is dependent on the total energy generated in the country. For electricity to get to customers, there are parties that need to work in synergy to see that it happens.

“They are referred to as the “electricity value chain” and are made up of the Generation Companies (GenCos), transmission companies (TCN), and distribution companies (DisCos). Each has its own primary responsibility, which impacts others.”

It said there was no truth in the rumour that it owed TCN 12 billion, leading to the refusal of the transmission company to transmit power to it.

On the allegation that it received N100 billion from the Anambra State government, the company said: “In response to the misinformation circulating on social media, we would like to clarify that there has been no transaction involving the payment of over N100 billion to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) by the Anambra State government.”

The company said the malignant is targeted at its chairman, Sir Emeka Offor, whose philanthropic gestures across Nigeria are very well known to all.
