The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced readiness to investigate alleged discrepancies in the figures entered into the result sheets at a polling unit in the ongoing Edo State Governorship election.
In a statement released on its official X account on Saturday, September 21, 2024, INEC revealed that it had received a report claiming that incorrect figures were recorded in one of the polling units used for the election.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tribune Online reports, had called for the prosecution of an official of the commission over alleged compromise and allocating of non-existent votes to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The commission led by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in its late-night reaction, noted that this is the second such complaint received out of the 4,519 polling units involved in the election process.
“The Commission’s attention has been drawn to an allegation of wrong figures entered into polling unit result sheets in the ongoing Edo State Governorship election,” the statement read.
INEC assured the public that it will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and take appropriate action if any irregularities are confirmed.
“The Commission will immediately investigate the matter and deal with any proven infraction,” INEC stated.
The electoral body reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a transparent and credible election process.
“We remain dedicated to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, and we urge all stakeholders to remain calm while we investigate this matter,” INEC added.
Meanwhile, Tribune Online earlier reported that over 76 percent of the election results had been uploaded onto the IReV portal as of 5: 30pm.
