Edo guber: This is clear example of ‘state capture’ — Peter Obi

Published by

Peter Obi, presidenial candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 general election has expressed strong disapproval of the conduct of the recent election in Edo State.

In a post on X, Obi described the election as a clear example of “state capture” and an attack on Nigeria’s democratic process.

According to him, “To the agencies and individuals being used to undermine our democracy simply because they hold positions of authority, please remember that your time in office is not eternal. The society that you are helping to destroy today will eventually take her revenge on you tomorrow.”

He criticised the flawed leadership recruitment process, warning that it threatens the country’s future.

“What happened over the weekend in the name of election in Edo State does not in any way represent the democratic process we chose as a method of electing our political leadership. Instead, it was a blatant example of ‘state capture’ and continued gross undermining of our democratic process and values,” Obi stated.

He urged those in authority not to depend on the manipulation of electoral processes to remain in power, warning that Nigeria’s investment in electoral technology, like the IReV and BVAS, must be allowed to function properly to prevent widespread falsification.

Obi also directed his message toward individuals and agencies responsible for undermining democracy, reminding them that their time in office is not permanent.

He further called on lecturers and others involved in manipulating the process to reflect on the long-term consequences of their actions, stressing that the damage being done today will affect future generations.

Obi reaffirmed his commitment to building a democratic Nigeria, concluding: “Today’s politics is not about capturing power, but about saving the country and making it work for everyone, regardless of their background.” He insisted that a new and truly democratic Nigeria is possible.
