Edo Community in Kano condemns Uromi killings, calls for justice

The President of the Edo Community in Kano, Elder Dr Patrick Agba, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of 16 Hausa travellers in Uromi, Edo State, describing the act as “satanic” and urging that every right-thinking person must denounce it.

Dr Agba, speaking to the press in Kano on Saturday, expressed solidarity with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo in their condemnation of the incident. He called for swift justice, stressing that the perpetrators must be brought to book without delay.

“The Edo Community in Kano sympathises with the Kano State Government, the families of the victims, and the general populace. Edo people are peace-loving and do not align themselves with those who engage in such heinous acts,” Dr Agba stated.

He acknowledged the widespread outrage sparked by the incident and commended security agencies for their swift action, noting that 14 suspects had already been arrested in connection with the attack. He insisted that those responsible must not escape punishment.

Similarly, the Sarki Edo in Kano, Fred Akhigbe, condemned the killings, stressing that Edo people are known for peaceful coexistence and do not support such violence.

“What happened is alien to our people. We are peace-loving citizens who live harmoniously with everyone, regardless of background. This incident is an affront to the unity of the country, and we do not accept it. It is illegal and must be condemned in the strongest terms. We call on the government to ensure justice is served accordingly,” Akhigbe said.

Both leaders commended President Tinubu and Governor Okpebholo for their swift response, expressing confidence that their firm stance would help restore peace and harmony.

Akhigbe, who has lived in Kano for over 50 years, highlighted the deep-rooted ties between the Edo and Hausa communities, noting that he is warmly received whenever he travels home and that Hausa residents in Kano appreciate seeing non-indigenes fluent in their language.
