In a grand celebration, His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, marked his 15-year reign as the revered Obong of Calabar.

The monarch, embodying the esteemed roles of a Natural ruler, treaty King, defender of the Christian Faith, and grand patriarch of the Efik kingdom, commemorated this milestone with a series of events that showcased the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The festivities commenced on December 18 with a Crystal anniversary thanksgiving at the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Duke Town Cathedral, Eyamba, Calabar.

The event was characterised by a regal procession, captivating traditional displays featuring Ekombi dancers, and the iconic Ekpe masquerade.

His Eminence, adorned in ceremonial attire and wearing the regalia presented by Queen Victoria of England, presided over the ceremony with grace and dignity.

The celebration continued with the Utomo Obong Golf kitty on December 22nd at the Calabar Golf Club, where enthusiasts gathered to pay homage to the long-reigning Obong.

The culmination of the 15-year anniversary festivities is the Utomo Obong, a prestigious event where all 12 Efik Clans express their reverence for the leadership of the Obong of Calabar.

Before ascending the throne, he held positions in the public and private sectors, culminating in becoming the Divisional Manager at McNair Nigeria Limited. His community called him back home, and he assumed leadership roles, eventually becoming the Clan Head and Etubom ufok Adiabo Ikot Mbo Otu.

Following the passing of the immediate past Obong in 2008, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V ascended the throne and was officially recognized by the Government of Cross River State on July 11, 2008. His coronation, blending tradition and Christianity, took place at the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Duke Town Parish.

The monarch has been instrumental in instituting scholarships for Efik students, fostering sustainable charity projects in Efik communities, and achieving the remarkable distinction of being installed as the Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
