ECOWAS, Red Cross, FMHA distribute relief materials to Adamawa flood victims

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in conjunction with the Federal Government’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the Nigeria Red Cross Society (NCRS), distributed relief materials to 12,000 victims of the 2022 flood yesterday in Mayo-Ine, Adamawa State.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Mr. Abel Enitian, thanked the ECOWAS under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the relief materials.

He noted that the ministry worked closely with development partners to identify the 2,000 households that were worst hit by the flooding.

He stressed that the delay in distribution was to ensure thorough planning and delivery.

Mr. Enitian commended the ECOWAS commission, the Nigeria Red Cross Society, and officials of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs for ensuring that the victims received the relief materials.

During the final distribution event, the National President of the Nigeria Red Cross Society, Prince Oluyemisi Adebayo Adeaga, highlighted that a total of 2,000 households, comprising about 12,000 beneficiaries, were benefiting from this distribution of relief materials to the victims of the 2022 flood disasters.

According to him, “The items include 25kg of parboiled rice, 15kg of garri, 12kg of beans, 5 liters of red oil and palm oil, as well as a cash amount of N91,500.”

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who flagged off the distribution, commended the three organizations for addressing the plight of victims of one of the worst floods ever experienced in the state two years ago.

Represented by the Commissioner of Humanitarian Services, Barrister Bello Diram, the governor stated, “The relief materials could not have come at a better time than this, particularly when Nigerians are facing hunger.”

He noted that while the effects of the 2022 flooding cannot be forgotten quickly, the Adamawa State government has moved from recovery and rehabilitation to development processes aimed at preventing future floods.

The governor emphasized, “Providing a buffer dam in Dasin in Adamawa State will offer the needed solution to this flooding, not only in Adamawa State but also in other states along the coastal line of the River Benue.”

Governor Fintiri commended the ECOWAS commission, the Nigeria Red Cross Society, and officials of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs for ensuring that the victims received relief materials.

There were goodwill messages from the ECOWAS permanent representative in Nigeria, the ECOWAS commission, the district head, and the Special Assistant to the President on Humanitarian Affairs.

Some beneficiaries who spoke to our correspondent expressed joy over the relief materials and prayed that the government would find ways to prevent such occurrences in the future.
