The ECOWAS Parliament has received Nigeria’s country report, presented by Senator Barau Jibrin, highlighting the country’s progress and challenges across political, security, economic, and human rights spheres.
Presented to the 6th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament, the report provided an overview of Nigeria’s political landscape, noting stability under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inclusive government.
The administration has actively engaged stakeholders in decision-making processes, focusing on economic policies, security, poverty eradication, youth unemployment, and public salary and wage reviews.
In terms of security, Nigeria is enhancing its capacity to tackle challenges, collaborating with regional and international partners to prevent youth recruitment into harmful groups.
The report underscored Nigeria’s economic advancements, with emphasis on diversification, infrastructure development, and attracting foreign investment. Despite global challenges, the economy is projected to grow by 3.76% in 2024.

Key reforms include the removal of fuel subsidies, inauguration of an economic council, and unification of the naira exchange rate.
However, the report acknowledged human rights challenges such as gender equality, discrimination, and access to justice. The government is addressing these issues through legal reforms, awareness campaigns, and educational programs.
Nigeria has met its financial obligations to ECOWAS and continues to collaborate with member states to foster regional integration. The country is also implementing reforms to enhance the foreign exchange market, stabilize the naira, and promote gender equality.
Senator Jibrin highlighted Nigeria’s dedication to regional cooperation and development, expressing appreciation for ECOWAS’ support in fostering a more prosperous and inclusive society for all citizens.
