Ebonyi gov’s wife empowers 100 women, young farmers with farm inputs, equipment

As the farming season approaches, the wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Mrs Uzoamaka Nwifuru, has empowered over one hundred women and young farmers in the state with farm equipment and inputs.

The wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Mrs Mary-Maudaline Nwifuru, has described agriculture as the backbone of the Nigerian economy and called on women and young farmers to put more effort into agricultural activities to ensure food sufficiency in their families and the country.

Mrs Nwifuru stated this during the distribution of farm inputs and equipment to one hundred Ebonyi women and members of the Young Farmers Club in a collaborative effort between the BERWO Foundation and the State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the Old Presidential Lodge, Abakaliki, at the weekend.

According to Mrs Nwifuru, the distribution of farm inputs and equipment to farmers aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda on agricultural projects and food security, spearheaded by the wife of the President, aimed at tackling the challenges and barriers that have prevented farmers from fully participating in agriculture.

She, however, maintained that empowering youth and women remains critical to ensuring the sustainability of the agricultural sector.

“This initiative, Renewed Hope Agriculture Support Programme, is designed to enhance productivity, promote agribusiness, and create wealth through four major components: Women in Agriculture Initiative, Young Farmers Club, Every Home a Garden Campaign, and Youth in Agriculture and Empowerment Programme.”

“Today, we are going to empower 100 women in agriculture. Through this programme, we aim to empower women by providing: Training Workshops that will focus on sustainable farming practices, financial literacy, and business management skills; Access to Resources such as seedlings, fertilisers, and funds to enhance productivity; and Networking Opportunities—by connecting women farmers with each other, we can help them share knowledge and increase their economic opportunities,” she said.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mrs Nkechinyere Iyioku, enjoined the women, the Young Farmers Club, and other beneficiaries to make good use of the inputs.

She thanked the wife of Nigeria’s President, Oluremi Tinubu, and the wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs Uzoamaka Nwifuru, for distributing the items in good time as the farming season begins.
