DSS releases NLC President, Ajaero

Published by

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released the detained president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero.

Informed sources both the Yellow House of the nation’s secret Police and the labour indicated that Ajaero was released on bail about after 11:00 pm, after he wrote a statement.

Credible labour sources said that Ajaero’s release followed a threat by the NLC to mobilise its affiliate unions for a nationwide showdown with the federal government if Ajaero was not released by midnight on Tuesday, September 10.

Tribune Online reports that Ajaero was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday on his way to the United Kingdom for a global Trade Union Congress (TUC) meeting.

Following his arrest, NLC in a statement had threatened to go on strike and had placed its affiliate bodies on alert if the service failed to release Ajaero.

The NLC had said in a statement by Benson Upah, its spokesperson that: “The congress will not stand idly by while the rights of its leaders and members are trampled upon.

”Accordingly, we demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Ajaero.”

The Secret Police has yet to issue any statement over the arrest and detention of the Labour Leader.

However, a source, who is a top official of the agency, had earlier explained to Tribune Online the reasons DSS operatives arrested Ajaero, saying the Labour leader also knew why he was arrested by the Service.
