DSS plotting to rearraign Sowore on fresh charges, Falana alleges

Published by

MR Femi Falana, lead counsel for the detained activist-politician, Omoyele Sowore, on Monday alleged that the Department of State Service (DSS) is planning to re-arraign his client on fresh charges.

The senior advocate, himself a leading rights activist, said the alleged move would be resisted until the issue of Sowore’s bail was sorted out.

He spoke on Channels television.

According to Falana, the fresh charges and planned rearraignment were geared towards further keeping the media personality in detention.

“An attempt is being made to file a fresh charge on Tuesday [today] so that there will be an excuse that ‘we are arraigning them in court, hence we are unable to release them’,” he alleged.

Sowore was arrested in August for planning a nationwide protest he labelled “RevolutionNow.”

The Federal Government claimed the planned demonstration was a treasonable act because it was to effect a regime change.

Following Sowore’s initial arraignment in September, he was granted bail by the trial judge.

He was charged with treasonable felony and defamation of the president, which he denied and granted bail in October, after being detained for 45 days on the order of the court.

Sowore was finally able to meet the bail conditions on November 6 and the presiding judge signed a warrant for his release, which the DSS acknowledged.

Days after, he was yet to breathe air of freedom, sparking national outrage.

Speaking on the bail controversy, Falana said top agents at the DSS had been plotting to repeat what they did to Sowore in September, in order to continue denying him freedom.

“If you recall, that was what was done when Justice Taiwo Taiwo granted Sowore bail on September 24. For a whole week, the order of the court was flouted. And then, of course, on September 30, he was arraigned together with Olawale Bakare.

“We are ready for them,” he added.

Falana was, however, not specific about the alleged fresh charges.
