Drunk-driver smashes car into police station in Manchester

Detectives in Manchester didn’t have much difficulty catching a drunk-driver this morning after he smashed his car into the front of their police station.

Officers heard the silver Mazda 3 slam into bollards outside Wythenshawe police station in the early hours of this morning.

Pictures from the scene show the mangled wreckage of the car, which was written off in the force of the collision, directly outside building’s front door.

A 55-year-man was found, uninjured, in the driver’s seat and was promptly arrested and later charged with drink driving.

The man, who also faces other possible driving charges, has since been bailed Dailymail reported.

The incident happened on the first day of many police force’s festive season push to tackle drink driving.

Greater Manchester Police tweeted: ”Day 1 of our Christmas drink drive campaign and our first drink driver couldn’t wait to hand himself in.”

Police forces around the country have launched their annual campaigns to catch drink drivers over the Christmas period.

The Met Police’s Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove said this morning: ‘This campaign is part of a wider national initiative with police forces around the UK increasing enforcement.

”It also supports Vision Zero which aims to eliminate deaths and serious injuries from London’s transport network by 2041, with drink and drug driving being a significant factor.

“Throughout this month of action, traffic officers will be carrying out enforcement to address any motoring offences, focusing on drink and drug driving.

”We also aim to raise awareness and help reduce these matters, reminding drivers that the police are on the lookout.”
