Drug sellers protest high cost of acquiring shops in Kano city

The Kano Drug Sellers Association (KDSA) staged a peaceful protest against the state government on Monday to express their displeasure over challenges confronting them in relocating to the economic city, saying that acquiring a shop at the new centre required over N37 million because wealthy individuals have hijacked the shops

The spokesman of the KDSA, Alhaji Musbau Khalid, then called on the state government to retrieve all the shops from those who bought them because of the huge amount they were reselling them They could not afford them

According to him, “those wealthy individuals that have bought the shops were leasing or reselling each shop at prices ranging from N30 million to N37 million, which they had to pay once

The protesters, who carried different placards, read: Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf, come to our aid. The economic situation can not afford us to get a shop for N30 million. Gov Abba Kabir Yusuf, collect the shops back and sell it for us at affordable prices.’

Other placards also read, Now we are dying of hunger. Where are we going to get N37 million for a shop? We were ready to move to an economic city, but there was no security of life or our property to be ensured.”

Speaking while addressing the protesters, the Kano state chief of staff, Hon.Shehu Sagagi, on behalf of Governor Yusuf, assured them the state government would hold a meeting with their leaders and look for a solution to their plight

Hon. Sagagi said, “We know you voted for us. We promise you that the state government will address your plight to ensure fairness and justice.”
