Driving innovation in renewable energy and global sustainability: Engr. Victor Eniola’s journey

After completing his diploma in mechanical engineering with distinction, Engr. Victor Eniola was accepted into the mechanical engineering programme at Obafemi Awolowo University. His final year project focused on the design and construction of a battery-operated floor sweeper, a trailblazing contribution that has been lauded as one of the department’s most remarkable achievements.

This innovative project received widespread recognition, being showcased on numerous occasions at various exhibits. The battery-operated floor sweeper was designed to be highly efficient and user-friendly, incorporating a rechargeable battery to ensure long operational life and reduced downtime.

The sweeper featured a compact, lightweight frame constructed from durable materials to enhance manoeuvrability and ease of use. Its design included a high-efficiency motor driving rotating brushes and a suction system, effectively capturing dust and debris from various floor surfaces.

Advanced filtration technology was integrated to minimize dust emissions, ensuring a cleaner environment. The project also incorporated ergonomic design principles, providing comfortable handling and ease of operation for users. Engr. Eniola’s meticulous attention to detail and innovative approach resulted in a highly effective cleaning device that stands as a testament to his engineering acumen and creativity.

Engr. Victor Eniola graduated with first-class honours in Mechanical Engineering and later joined the University of Benin. There, he assisted in teaching Engineering Mechanics (Statics & Dynamics) and collaborated with a renowned professor on large-scale system research. In 2013, he joined the Energy Commission of Nigeria, where he played a pivotal role in formulating and updating the Renewable Energy Master Plan and National Energy Policy, and in implementing renewable energy, energy efficiency, and rural electrification projects. His contributions also extended to international collaborations, including initiatives with the United Nations and the University of Münster, Germany.

Engr. Eniola’s career highlights include significant roles in projects addressing universal energy access, such as the UN Secretary-General’s Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiatives. His expertise in renewable energy technologies and policy development led to collaborations with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) on comprehensive studies and initiatives aimed at enhancing energy access and sustainability in Nigeria.

In addition to his achievements, Engr. Eniola earned a master’s degree in renewable energy with perfect distinction from Naresuan University in 2019, specializing in solar photovoltaic power forecasting using machine learning techniques. His professional journey has been marked by numerous awards, including the prestigious CMU research scholarship, and active participation in international conferences and workshops on renewable energy.

Engr. Eniola has established a niche for himself in enhancing grid stability and power supply reliability. In 2020, his extraordinary proficiency in the field was recognized by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, who specifically chose him to join a specialized team of energy experts responsible for conducting power quality and supply duration measurements in residential buildings across the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Throughout his tenure at the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Engr. Eniola has been affiliated with the Research and Consultancy department, where his contributions have solidified his reputation as a dedicated energy professional and researcher.
