Driver arraigned for allegedly killing 3 pedestrians

A driver, Tijani Basit, was on Monday brought before an Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged reckless driving and death of three pedestrians.

The 42-year-old driver, Basit, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of causing the death of three pedestrians and driving a vehicle on the highway without a licence.

The Police Prosecutor, ASP Sunday Eigbejiale, had told the court that the accused driver committed the offences on July 2 about 2.20 p.m. at Alapako area on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Eigbejiale said the accused, who drove a Toyota Camry car with registration no. EPE 140 BP in a dangerous manner, killed three pedestrians.

The driver, who was on a very high speed, lost control and hit the pedestrians — Onakomaiya Bukola, 49; Aderonke Sowande, 40; and Giwa Janet, 42 — on the pedestrians’ lane.

He also said the accused drove the car on the highway without driver’s licence.

The offences contravened Sections 5, 10 and 17 of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation 2004.

The driver pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

Chief Magistrate Adeola Adelaja, who gave the ruling, said the sureties must reside and work within the court’s jurisdiction with an evidence of tax payment.

In addition, one of the sureties must own a house in the area and also live in it.

The case was adjourned until Aug 8.
