Drive cautiously during yelutide, NURTW urges members

Published by

The National Union of Road Transport Workers( NURTW) has appealed to commercial drivers, especially those plying interstate routes, to drive cautiously during the last few weeks of the year to avoid accidents and other unwanted incidents

The Acting president of the union, Alhaji Issa Ore, gave advice to drivers as tips on how to have accident-free trips, especially during the end-of-year rush

He stated that commercial drivers, especially those going on long journeys, should always make sure that their vehicles are in good condition to avoid unnecessary breakdowns and delays on the highways.

“As commercial drivers plying interstate routes, you should always ensure that your vehicles are in good condition.

You should check your tyres, lighting system, brakes, etc. Your wipers must be working perfectly because of the rain and harmattan in some cases

“You should make sure that all your vehicle papers are valid to avoid confrontation with law enforcement agencies like the police, VIO, and FRSC. Make sure that all your vehicle papers are up-to-date.”

Alhaji Ore equally advised that motorists should try as much as possible to avoid night journeys because of the risks and dangers associated with night journey

“I would like to advise our members to avoid travelling at night. They should always check out for their journey during the day.

Visibility is always poor at night, and apart from that, the security of the country should also be taken into consideration. To avoid unpleasant situations, it is advisable to do away with night travel.”

He advised drivers to always ensure that they have enough rest before they embark on long trips.

“Don’t be tempted by the urge to make more trips or more money. Try to relax always.”
