Dr. Tolulope Ojo-Akosile leads charge in Covid-19, maternal health research

Renowned researcher, Dr. Tolulope Ojo-Akosile, a distinguished figure in the realm of medical research, has said she will continue to spearhead groundbreaking studies aimed at unraveling the mysteries of Covid-19 and maternal health.

With a relentless dedication to advancing scientific knowledge and improving public health outcomes, Dr. Ojo-Akosile’s work is making waves in the medical community.

Reflecting on her latest endeavors, Dr. Ojo-Akosile remarked, “In the face of evolving health challenges, it is imperative that we strive to deepen our understanding of COVID-19 and maternal health. My research endeavors, ranging from COVID-19 household transmission studies to investigations into maternal health, are driven by a commitment to addressing critical gaps in our knowledge and finding innovative solutions to complex health issues.”

According to her, pioneering work in COVID-19 household transmission studies has provided invaluable insights into the role of children and adolescents in SARS-CoV-2 transmission, guiding public health interventions amidst the pandemic.

She noted that her NIH-funded research on COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant and postpartum women underscores her dedication to maternal and infant health.

“By unraveling the safety and immune response of these vaccines, we aim to empower expectant mothers with the information they need to protect themselves and their babies,” Dr. Ojo-Akosile explained.

In response to the surge in COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit admissions among pregnant patients, Dr. Ojo-Akosile spearheaded a study to understand the impact of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) on this vulnerable population.

“Our study aims to shed light on the maternal characteristics, obstetrical outcomes, and perinatal outcomes of pregnant and postpartum patients receiving ECMO for COVID-19. By examining the duration of ECMO, complications, and survival rates, we hope to inform clinical management strategies and improve patient outcomes,” she elaborated.

Furthermore, Dr. Ojo-Akosile’s research extends to exploring the intricate relationship between maternal health and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

Her current study, titled Hypothalamus, Pancreas, and Placenta Study (HYPP), investigates whether changes in the maternal brain, specifically the hypothalamus, are associated with the development of diabetes in pregnancy.

“By examining potential associations between hypothalamic changes, pancreatic dysfunction, and placental abnormalities, we aim to identify novel biomarkers for GDM and inform preventive strategies,” Dr. Ojo-Akosile elucidated.

In addition to her research endeavors, Dr. Ojo-Akosile serves as the coordinator of the Emory Prospective Opportunity for Women’s health Research (EmPOWR) Initiative, overseeing a registry and biorepository dedicated to advancing women’s and reproductive health research.

With her multifaceted approach to research and unwavering commitment to improving health outcomes, her pioneering work serves as a beacon of hope for patients and clinicians alike, paving the way for a healthier future for all.
