Dr. Obichi Obiajunwa, a distinguished innovation expert and public health physician, continues to make waves across the continent through his leadership and dedication to fostering transformative growth. As the founder and executive director of the Hutzpa Center for Innovation and Development, a nonprofit organization, Dr. Obiajunwa has been at the forefront of empowering individuals, organizations, and communities with the vision and tools to achieve continuous, disruptive, and transformational growth.
Yesterday, October 19, 2024, Dr. Obiajunwa delivered the keynote address at the graduation event of Nigerian researchers, who completed a course organized by the Research Innovation Academy on conducting innovative research. His keynote speech, titled From Bench to Business: Trade Secrets for Ideas Commercialization, offered valuable insights into the process of turning research ideas into viable commercial ventures. This address further solidified his reputation as a thought leader in the intersection of research, innovation, and business development.
Dr. Obiajunwa’s contributions to the innovation ecosystem have earned him significant recognition. For two consecutive years, 2021 and 2022, he received an award of recognition from the Embassy of Israel in Nigeria for his outstanding contributions to the development of Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem. He was also honored for his role as the pioneer program manager of the Embassy’s initiative, the Innovation Fellowship for Aspiring Inventors and Researchers (I-FAIR).
One of Dr. Obiajunwa’s flagship initiatives is the Young Innovation Leaders (YIL) Fellowship, which has trained over 2,000 young professionals from more than 25 African countries. The fellowship equips participants with the skills to address pressing challenges in their communities using cutting-edge innovation concepts and problem-solving tools, positioning them as leaders in their respective fields.
Dr. Obiajunwa’s journey began in Owerri, Imo State, where he was born on June 12, 1985. He completed his secondary education at Government Secondary School Owerri in 2001 and later pursued a degree in medicine and surgery at Abia State University, graduating in 2010. After practicing clinical medicine in Nigeria for four years, Dr. Obiajunwa sought to deepen his expertise in public health and innovation. He earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel in 2015, as a Pears Scholarship Awardee. This was followed by a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus on Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Venture Creation in 2017, which he completed at the George Washington University, USA, as an exchange student.
Through his work, Dr. Obiajunwa continues to inspire a new generation of leaders across Africa, pushing the boundaries of innovation and creating lasting impact in the public health and development sectors.
