Don’t use public funds for campaigns, Bishop Oluwarohunbi warns politicians

Published by

BISHOP of the Diocese of Yewa, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Right Reverend Michael Oluwarohunbi, has called on political office holders not to use public funds to campaign for elections.

He stated this in his charge at the second session of the tenth synod of the Diocese of Yewa, on Friday, at Holy Trinity Church, Ibooro (Yewa North Archdeaconry), Ogun State, which had as its theme: Serve Ye the Lord.

He said: “Another election year is fast approaching, when our capacity to undergo democratic process will be put to the test again. It is very instructive to state that all hands must be on deck.

“Public funds meant to execute projects or carry out services for the benefit of the people must not be diverted to fund political campaigns. It is also important to appeal to our politicians to eschew bitterness and violence when the campaign starts.”

While calling for an upward review of the minimum wage to reflect current economic realities, he commended the Federal Government on agriculture, and called for efforts to ensure that Nigeria returned to a season of economic boom.

Speaking on behalf of the Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, Secretary to the State Government, Mr Taiwo Adeoluwa, commended the church for its efforts at sustaining religious harmony and called on them not to relent in their prayers for those in government.
