Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as appalling and shameful the outright lack of COVID-19 test centres in Anambra and has warned both the state and Federal Government not to politicise the party’s effort in building the most needed edifice for the sake of humanity.
The party maintained that the state government can not claim that the state is safe when tests are not conducted to ascertain the COVID-19 status of its citizenry.
Speaking to journalists in Awka on Monday, the state publicity secretary of the People Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Nnamdi Nwangwu, stated that the PDP was serious when it requested for a location to set up a COVID-19 testing centre in Anambra State within three weeks.
He stated that the compassionate disposition of the party was clarified further after the very impressive COVID-19 intervention by the PDP in the state capital, Awka on Saturday, May 16, 2020.

He recalled that PDP stakeholders in the state had on Saturday 16th May 2020 made a whopping contribution of N125 million towards the establishment of COVID-19 test centres in the state to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nwangwu emphasised that there was nothing like political talk regarding the request for a location to set up a testing centre for the benefit of the citizens.
“The story is usually that Anambra is safe regarding the COVID-19 infections but how can one really ascertain a state is safe if there is no testing centre anywhere in the state?
“Testing centres or, at least one, is the first thing a state should set up alongside isolation centres in this battle against this COVID-19 pandemic.
“Yes, the state government is trying but it can definitely do more. It is truly very appalling that a vibrant state like Anambra has no testing centre.
“Our people need effective tests to know exactly if we are in danger or not. Allowing everyone to walk freely, even though with facemasks, is not ideal if regular tests are not carried out to ascertain our level of contamination.
“Without tests, people walk carelessly about, flouting social distancing rules recklessly. Setting up COVID-19 testing centres is long overdue but we can no longer overlook this very important aspect,” Nwangwu posited.
He, therefore, called on the state government and indeed the federal government not to politicise the issue by wasting undue time in allocating space to set up a COVID-19 testing centre in the state.
He said, “This is not a matter of politics. This is a matter of life and death and we should all work together.
“The state government can’t do everything. We know and that is the more reason it should shake the hand of assistance being offered to it. Even if it had concluded plans to set up one; having two testing centres in a state is even better, especially if that state is Anambra.”
