Don’t panic! Do these seven things if bitten by dog

Published by

Do you know that rabies is grossly under-reported in Nigeria with only 998 human and 273 dog-suspected rabies cases reported across the country between 2017 and 2022?

In this article, TRIBUNE ONLINE highlights seven (7) first-aid steps that can help prevent the fatal outcomes of dog bite.

1. Clean the bite wound with soap and water.

2. Gently pat it dry.

3. If it is bleeding, apply pressure on to it to stop the bleeding.

4. Put a sterile bandage over the wound.

5. Consult a doctor immediately to understand the need of post-exposure prophylaxis for rabies.

6. Alleviate the wounded region to a level higher than the heart. This helps in slowing down the swelling and prevents infection.

7. Apply antibiotics as prescribed.
