Don’t limit yourselves to confines of hospital, OAU don tells nurses

Head of the Department of Nursing, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Professor Omolola Irinoye, has urged nurses not to limit their practices to hospitals but to be more involved in community-based practices.

Irinoye who gave the admonition during the maiden induction of the graduating pioneer students of Nursing, Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, called for nursing education that would be responsive to the modern needs of the profession.

Irinoye who is a specialist in Community, Sexual and Reproductive Health Nursing, urged nurses to look beyond a hospital or classrooms in order to achieve the sustainable development goals and universal health coverage.

The university don stated that with the introduction of a new curricular that would focus on health technology and emerging trends in the profession, the students and practitioners would be better for it.

“Nurse Education and training programme must graduate nurses who drive progress in primary healthcare and universal health coverage.

“Actions must include investment in nursing faculty, availability of clinics sites and accessibility of programme offered to attract a diverse student body.

“Our curriculum must be aligned with national health priorities as well as emerging global issues to prepare nurses to work effectively in inter-professional teams and maximise graduate competencies in health technology,”

Meanwhile, the Founder and Pro-Chancellor of Achievers University, Dr Bode Ayorinde, has warned parents that the institution’s certificate is not for sale.

According to Ayorinde, the institution would not bow to the pressure of some parents who were bent on purchasing results for their wards who failed the school’s examinations.

“A 200-level student in nursing science had three carryovers. The mother took to my WhatsApp and lambasted me. She abused me thoroughly on why her daughter had carryovers.

“And I replied, perhaps you wanted to buy a certificate. We are not selling certificate. If you want to buy certificate go elsewhere. You paid for tuition. We impact knowledge. And anybody who fails will have an opportunity to retake the exams.

“We have asked the student to withdraw for the indiscipline of her parents. She will not only withdraw, we also refund the two years tuition fee to her, so that she will go and finish the nursing programme in her home.

“In this university, my daughter has finished with third class because I will not interfere with the results. We are not awarding marks here.”

“We’ll not influence any result. This university is known properly like a university. Anybody who wants to buy certificate should turn back at the gate, we are not selling.”
