Don’t be mere consumers, be contributors, Oyedepo charges Landmark varsity graduates

TO add value to society, new graduates of Landmark University, Omu-Aran, have been urged to adopt a contributor mentality rather than a consumer orientation.

Dr David Oyedepo, the Chancellor of the university, made this statement during his speech at the institution’s 11th convocation ceremony, which took place in Omu-Aran, on Friday.

Oyedepo, in his address entitled, “Contribution mentality: Key to a world of exploits”, bemoaned the large consumer lifestyle prevalent in this part of the world and therefore appealed to the new graduates to follow the path of active contribution to their society.

“Young people, be contribution-minded, be contribution-conscious as a lifestyle. The journey will be grandeur, the journey will be fulfilling and empowering…It is by making our contributions that life becomes sustainable, meaningful, and impactful,” Dr Oyedepo said.

“Everybody has something to offer. Young people, you have something to offer. You are not a liability on your generation, you are an asset. Look inward, there is something there. Look outward, there is some vacuum to fill,” he added.

In her address, the pro-chancellor of Landmark University, Pastor (Mrs) Faith Oyedepo advised the new graduates not to be a part of the challenges facing society today. Rather, she said they must be the solution. “Your contribution will be the yardstick by which your life is measured. Never be part of the problem, but the solution to lingering societal challenges,” Mrs Oyedepo said.

While speaking on “Looking Ahead to the Future”, Mrs Oyedepo enjoined the new graduates to allow God to lead them in their endeavours, and be committed to personal growth, just as she said that they should be aware of friends and friendships.

Professor Kolawole O. Ajanaku, the vice-chancellor of Landmark University, shared exciting updates during the event, highlighting the institution’s growing reputation.

He mentioned recent international awards and recognitions received by both staff and students.

Furthermore, Landmark University has achieved impressive rankings, being recognized as the second-best university in Nigeria, the third-best in West Africa, and the 11th-best in Sub-Saharan Africa according to the World University Rankings 2025.

The Registrar of the institution, Mr Adebayo Ajala, urged the graduates to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained at Landmark University to address societal challenges. He encouraged them to demonstrate that they are indeed the solution providers they have been trained to be in life.

A total of 617 graduates were awarded first degrees in various disciplines with 71 of them bagging first class. In the postgraduate category, degrees, certificates, and diplomas were issued to 61 graduates at the ceremony.
