The Donkey dealers Association of Nigeria has frowned over the activities of Nigeria customs service (NCS) towards its members doing their businesses.
In a statement signed by the National President of the Association, Mr Dike Ifeanyi expressed displeasure over the status of donkey business in Nigeria.
“We are dealers of donkeys and its derivatives throughout the country. Our industry has directly employed more than twenty-five thousand people and one hundred and eighty thousand jobs created indirectly.
“The harassment of NCS is painful and counterproductive, and it’s really sad to see an industry with such economic prospect dying silently”, the statement said.
The Association said Instead of encouraging the development of ranches and supporting breeding of donkeys which Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine services (NAQS) have mapped out as the solution to the depleting population of Donkey in Nigeria as well as making Nigeria a Donkey hub in Africa, the NCS has resorted to harassing and exploiting its members
The Association also said that the efforts of NAQS is beginning to yield results in areas of ranching and breeding for which its members have commenced the setting up of ranches in various parts of the country.
“The activities of the Nigerian Customs Service who incessantly impound arrest our members and their goods is regrettable and it needs to stop.
“The Association is also of the view that only the Quarantine Service ( NAQS) is legally empowered for certification of all Agricultural products and as a result of its duty of certification of Agricultural products, NAQS should be allowed to do their job as it is obtained globally.
“The Nigeria customs services recently in Kebbi State confiscated about 1,390 bags of donkey meat heading to Onitsha Anambra valued about N42.534 Million and destroyed it. It’s painful to note that these meat are not being exported out the country Their claim is that it’s prohibited that Nigeria is a signatory to the international convention on wildlife”, the statement noted.
The National body of the Association reiterates its determination to fish out all meddlers who have made the business look unwholesome and illegal particularly Chinese smugglers who it said are bent on sabotaging the effort of NAQS in regulating this Donkey industry in Nigeria.
“We enjoin the Nigeria customs services to perform their duties while they limit their function to the Nigerian Port and to revenue generation.
“We further pledge our commitment to upscaling the Nigeria Economy by doing the business in line with laid down regulations and in accordance with international best practices”, the statement added.
