Don advocates constitution amendment to guarantee food security

THE need to urgently amend the nation’s constitution to make provision for right of food and food security in the country cannot be overemphasised.

According to the President of Farm and Infrastructure Foundation, Prof. Gbolagade Ayoola, human right to food is sacrosanct and should not be seen as a need of human beings.

Professor Ayoola spoke at a South South farmers stakeholders meeting in Asaba recently, saying  right to life as enshrined in the constitution cannot exist without first, the right to food.

Quoting the United Nations world food programme, the FIF president noted that famine was threatening 20 million people in four countries, including Nigeria, stressing that the right to food bill, if passed into law, would help ensure that government prioritise food security.

Prof. Ayoola said every person should have a right to food that should be respected, protected and guaranteed by the state, adding that no one should be deprived under any circumstance.

Stakeholders, including women spoke extensively, asking the Federal Government to make a clear-cut policy on food security to end hunger in the land, even as activities of herdsmen were said to be a deprivation to rights to food.
