The first and second best students among the first set of graduates of Dominion University, Ibadan, Olaoluwani Israel Oseni and Oore-Ofe Anthonia Ojo-Lanre, have revealed the secret behind their emergence out of the 96 who graduated from the school.
A total of 22 out of 96 made it first class, while Oseni came first with a CGPA of 4.88 in Computer Science, while Ojo-Lanre, who came second, had a 4.87 CGPA in Mass Communication.Â
Speaking during the maiden convocation ceremony of the University held recently, Oseni attributed his success story to God, personal research work and exploration of numerous information abound on social media platforms.
He said: “I wake up at 3 a.m. most days of the week going through what we have done in school; I do walk up to my lectures to seek clarifications in areas I feel are unclear to me. After that, I will go back to reading and read again.Â
“Aside from this, I usually embark on personal research too. I explored social media a lot, before I seek assistance from my lecturers, I first explore social media platforms. Some people believe social media is used for negative things but I can say categorically that it is very useful if used in the right way just like I did and will continue to.”
Ojo-Lanre, while sharing her success story, said: “I can only be grateful to God because it has not been easy. You know, reading without light coping with bad weather conditions is not palatable, but I thank God for putting me through, so I give glory to the almighty God.
“Aside from God being with me, I can say the major thing which helped me achieve this feat is self-discipline. Discipline means depriving myself of certain forms of comfort, such as waking up at midnight to read and spending less time on leisure.
“There is no way one could have made a first-class without getting to sacrifice some indulgence. Academic excellence requires total commitment and discipline. Once again, I give thanks to God for the grace.
“Also, Dominion University has affected my life meaningfully, particularly my spiritual life. I thank the Chancellor, Bishop T.V Adelakun, for everything he has been able to do for us and what he will continue to do.”
Also, speaking with journalists on his daughter’s achievement, the father of Anthonia Oore-Ofe Ojo-Lanre, who is a former Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, Comrade Wale Ojo-Lanre, said: “I have to thank God for her life, her birth was a very interesting story. There was a fight with me and her mother on whether we should keep the pregnancy of abort it.Â
“Here she is today, she opted to study Mass Communication, I wanted her to study law and she said no and today to God be the glory, first time in my family and my clan, we are having a first class graduate. It is not easy to have first class, I attempted it when I was in law school, I could not make it. But she made it once and it is something we have to thank God for.”
