Doguwa’s saga: We’ve no intention to terminate charges, says Kano Attorney General

Kola Oyelere, Kano

The Kano State Attorney General Musa Abdullahi Lawan has refuted the rumour making round that Kano State Government is planning to terminate the alleged culpable homicide and other criminal charges against Majority leader of the Federal House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, describing the rumour as unfounded and baseless

Hon. Doguwa, a member of All Progressive Congress (APC) representing Doguwa/Tundun- wada Federal district in Kano state, was last week granted a N500 million bail over an alleged culpable homicide leveled against him.

The impression of many people was that the state government was allegedly planning to ignored the charge against him.

However, while speaking on the issue on Friday the Kano Attorney General, Lawan, told the pressmen, that as far as the ministry of justice is concern, the case was adjourned to last Tuesday for ruling on bail application by Kano State Magistrate court number 54 which was holding charge, pending when the legal advise will be ready for proper prosecution at state high court.

According to him,” Though granting bail pending trial is not in anyway the end of the case, sincerely speaking, ministry of justice was not aware about the bail application by the defendant, we were not served because it was an exparte application.”

Barrister Lawan further stated that the police supplied them with the case diary last week Wednesday for the next line of action.

His words ” We have studied the case diary very well and you know, we don’t need to rush, considering the nature of the charge against the defendant, this is capital offence, for us to give legal advise and prepare a charge, we need to study it very well.”

“We have perused the case diary and I already instructed the case file be transmitted to the police yesterday, Thursday with our observations and legal advise, so that we can properly charge and arraign the defendant at state high court with offences he alleged to have been committed, on behalf of the state government.”

However, when asked if there is any interest some where or he is facing an intense pressure over the case, the Kano Attorney General, Lawan said if there is interest at the first place, the defendant will not go to prison.

He then debunked the insinuations going round on social media and some quarters that as his capacity of Kano Attorney General will file nolle presequi in favour of the defendant, describing the rumour as politics.

He said, the rumour doesn’t make sense for him to terminate the charge against the defendant.

We need more information and we have informed the police, there are certain things ought not to have been said in the media, because it may jeopardize our case.” He concluded.

The case was investigated by police at a very short time and brought to the ministry for legal advise.

He insisted that the ministry will not close its eyes because it was investigated at very short time and proceed without acceding to proper procedure.
