Does “V” become loose after normal delivery?

Published by

Dear Monica,
I am a 25-year-old woman and my husband and I are expecting our first child. I have decided to go for a typical “V” delivery instead of a C-section. However, I am worried that it could affect my s*x life as I have been told by my friends that the “V” becomes very loose after a normal delivery. Is this true? And if yes, what can I do to make my “V” muscles tight again?

—Tina, Abuja.

Dear Monica,

I am 36 and a mother of two; I had both of them through the normal delivery. My second child is seven months old; I must confess, I no longer enjoy s*x with my husband and I am afraid that he is losing interest in having s*x with me too. This is because; one, he has stopped initiating s*x and the few times I did, he was not really enthusiastic. He complained that my “V” has become wider and he keeps slipping out which is quite embarrassing.

I personally  feel embarrassed with the unusual sloppy sound which comes from my “V” area the few times we had s*x after my second child. Please, does the “V” get bigger after each child and what is the solution?

Melinda and Tina, the answer to your questions is yes; it is possible for the “V” to be loose or lax after a natural delivery. It is normal for the “V” opening to become bigger than usual or stretched out as the pelvic floor muscles tend to lose their tone after delivery.

However, there is no reason to get overly worried or paranoid over this situation as taking Kegel exercises will help in both, toning and tightening the muscles around the “V” opening and urethra.

Kegel exercises are easy to do and you can do it at regular intervals throughout the day for best results. You can do them by holding your urine halfway through urination by clenching your “V” muscles and trying to stop the flow of urine.

Apart from Kegel exercises, Vajroli Mudra is another form of exercise that can help. According to Dr Raju Kothari, Head of the Department of s*xual Medicine at KEM Hospital, Mumbai, India, Vajroli Mudra is another effective way of tightening and toning the “V” muscles after childbirth. He stated that Kegel exercises and the Vajroli Mudra are virtually the same, but the Vajroli Mudra has far better and faster results. For Vajroli Mudra, the woman only needs to take a deep breath and then hold it. While holding your breath, simultaneously try to hold or pull your genitals in the upwards direction. This is just like holding urine during Kegel exercises.  He recommended 10 rounds of the Vajroli Mudra in the morning and evening for eight weeks, as this helps in tightening the “V” muscles.

These simple exercises for eight weeks will go a long way in rejuvenating your s*x life once you are ready to have s*x again after childbirth. It is, however, important for the woman to see her gynaecologist and get a clean bill of health before resuming s*x after childbirth.
