Do not joke with your children’s education, Lagos Deputy Governor tells parents

LAGOS State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has urged parents to take education of their children very seriously.

He said that giving children the best of education from the primary to tertiary levels and with good character remained the most valuable legacy to give them.

He also asked them to inculcate in their children good moral values including telling them repeatedly that “there is no good shortcut other than hardwork, commitment and being prayerful to success in life.

Hamzat shared this thought recently at an event to mark the 80th anniversary of Odu Abore Memorial Primary School, Mushin, Lagos, where he had his primary school education.

He promised to build and equip an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) centre for the school.

According to him, the construction work will commence immediately on the project and complete in record time.

The deputy governor said he chose to donate an ICT centre to his alma mater in order to lay a solid foundation for the student and to appreciate God for what he has become in life today.

He said he hoped the school would make good use of the facility and also take good care of it when in use.

He, however, asked both the students and teachers of the school to be diligent and focus on their respective duties, promising that the state government would continue to provide quality and quantitative free and accessible education to every child in the state.

Speaking earlier, the state Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, commended the leadership styles of both Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat for what she called their genuine commitment to the provision of quality and qualitative education in the state.

She, just like the deputy governor, also urged parents to be more responsible to their children, saying that is a way to secure a greater future for them.

In his own remark also at the event, the Executive Chairman of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board(SUBEB), Wahab Alawiye-King, said people and parents inclusive, should not leave out responsible parenting when talking about fundamental human rights.

He said while the government would continue to do all it could, based on available resources to provide good basic education for every child in the state, parents should on their part live up to their parental roles over them.
