Do more to eradicate banditry in Zamfara, Group tells Gov Lawal

A coalition of civil society organizations, the Situation Room on the War Against Banditry, has raised concerns about how the Zamfara State government is handling the banditry crisis.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the group’s convener, Nwogu Ndubisi, expressed that the state’s response to the crisis, particularly regarding the notorious bandit leader Turji, has been inadequate.

He stated that this inadequacy has allegedly escalated tensions and insecurity in Zamfara and neighboring areas.

Ndubisi explained that Zamfara has been devastated by a severe banditry crisis, marked by kidnappings, killings, and cattle rustling.

He added that rural communities have been forced to pay protection money to bandits to avoid being raided.

The coalition also criticized the allocation of resources in the state’s budget, expressing concerns that funds may be diverted from essential public services.

The group further questioned Governor Dauda Lawal’s response to the military’s recent success in eliminating bandit kingpin Kachalla Halilu.

They urged the governor to support the military’s efforts to restore peace in the region.

The Situation Room on the War Against Banditry called for increased transparency and accountability in addressing the crisis.

They also encouraged the federal government, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and relevant agencies to continue their efforts to bring peace to Zamfara and the North West region.

Ndubisi stated, “The people of Zamfara deserve a leader who prioritizes their safety and security. They deserve better—a leader who will confront these issues head-on.”

“It is high time leadership prioritizes the safety and security of the people.”

“The Situation Room on the War Against Banditry urges the federal government, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and relevant agencies to continue their efforts to bring peace to Zamfara and the North West region.”
