The shindig party has been on for more than four hours, DJ Venum doesn’t look like he’s slowing down. It’s a few hours into the new day here in Lagos State. The show is called Safehaus, a DJ Venum convened party.
With the recent global takeover of Afrobeats and the diasporal positioning of some Nigerian artistes, the popularity and utilization of Nigerian DJs, Hypemen, etc. has increased exponentially. The overall cost for booking Afrobeats artists has been on the rise and they even charge in dollars.
The DJs have been the saving grace, and shows pop up weekly entertaining numerous attendees. Monday is dedicated to Obi’s house, on the Mainland part of Lagos, we have the Mainland block party, and many other notable get-togethers that are continuing to flourish. It has been a collaboration of like minds coming together to organize events and contributing their quota to the ecosystem. DJ Venum has joined that elite list with his Safehaus.
In January 2024, he organized his first street carnival in Bariga, Lagos State with over two thousand attendees. The event was a classic way of introducing the brand to the street, which is also an integral part of Afrobeats culture.
On June 22, 2024, I was in attendance at the SafeHaus held at Freeme Space, Lekki, Lagos State. It was a gathering of night ravers, entertainment icons and major stakeholders in the industry. There were over one thousand people immersed in the highly social environment gyrating to the music.
DJ Venum’s wide range of taste in music is undeniable as he switches effortlessly between genres, expertly maneuvering between a variety of artists. Likewise he is conscious of the age range of his audience as he transitions between 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and today’s popular songs.
Afrobeats started in the late 20th century and has reached impressive heights in the last decade, continuing to draw fans from different demographics and age ranges. The audience cuts across students of major tertiary institutions from Lagos State as well as dedicated fans and lovers of Afrobeats music and pop culture from far and wide.
Afrobeats legend Skales, headlined the event, and with Dj Venum on decks he took the fans through his repertoire of amazing music, from classic records like “Shake Body”, “Temper”, “Emergency” and others. He also granted the audience an exclusive premier of his hit song, “Jogo”.
The audience also experienced performances from Gdzilla, Muis, ActiveBoy, Kemuel, Sharpboi, Musgan, Livia, Rozzz and more. Many other DJs came out to show support including
Omo Ekun, Dj Indica, Dj Riley and Dj BreezyMillz.
In 2018, when DJ Venum broke the World Record for Longest Club DJing, there was no doubt that he was heading for greatness. More than half a decade later, he is already a familiar brand in notable Nigerian entertainment circles. This didn’t come easy as he had to put in a lot of hours in training, sharpening his skill and developing industry experience. It has definitely been a combination of consistent growth, tenacity, and perseverance.
