Despite the poor access roads and other logistics constraints, volume of exported cargoes through Tin Can Island Port increased by almost a hundred percent between January and April 2019. Abdullahi Baba Musa, Customs Area Controller of the Tin-Can Customs Command said the command exported a total volume of 115, 000 metric tonnes from January to April compared to 62,000 metric tonnes exported in the corresponding period of last year.
He attributed the improvement to increase in government awareness moves aimed at informing and sensitizing stakeholders about benefits of exports.

Musa also praised his officers for sticking to the time-release principles of quick but careful approach to process imports and exports in line with government ease of doing business agenda.
According to him, cigarettes are among the most exported commodity from Nigeria to other countries.
The Controller applauded the exporters who he described as resilient in growing their business. He listed commodities being exported through the port to include cocoa beans, sesame seeds, cashew nuts, leather, rubber, cigarettes and ginger. Other export commodities listed include zinc ore, soft drinks, beer, tissue paper, bathroom slippers and frozen shrimps.
The controller further explained that month by month export figure in the command has been impressive showing signs that many Nigerians are embracing the line of business.
For the first quarter of the year, the command processed a total of 83,218 tonnes with Free on Board value of N32,447,668,739
He gave a breakdown saying January 2019, tonnage of 24,623.5 FOB value of N13,001,246,995 was processed; February 26,045.6 with FOB of N12,331,535,344 and March had a 32,548.9 with FOB value of N11,148,869,400
