Dubai-based entrepreneur Tonye Anyanwu has called on the Nigerian youths to desist from acts that might jeopardise the safety of citizens or the security of the country.
He made this call while reacting to the recently released Justice Doris Okuwobi led Lagos state judicial panel of inquiry on restitution for victims of the SARS related abuses and other matters report.
Tonye while speaking with Tribune Online said the release of the report is a welcome development as it will bring closure to a lot of people as well as vindicate the Nigerian youths who were called names after the incident. He urged the federal government and the appropriate authorities to take decisive action and put in place checks and balances to curtail the excesses of some bad ones in some of the country’s security agencies.
Anyanwu urged the youths to take up active roles in bipartisan politics so they can help enact policies and effect lasting change that will benefit every Nigerian youth in the long run. He also asked them not to get involved in acts that will disrupt the Nation’s unity and peaceful co-existence.
The report made various recommendations which included disciplinary action for some of the officers who refused to honour the summons of the panel. The report which also indicted the Nigerian army called for all officers and men that were deployed to the Lekki toll gate on October 20, 2020, to face appropriate disciplinary action, and also recommended that the Nigeria Army be discouraged from intervening in civilian conflict situations.
The panel’s report recommended that all those arrested in the course of the protest should be granted bail, prosecuted for any offence that may be alleged against them or where no prima facie evidence of culpability is disclosed upon due investigation, be released immediately.
It further recommended adequate funding and effective training for the police, and the provision of more modern equipment. It also recommended a more harmonized communication system among all security agencies of Lagos state, and the improvement of the welfare of police officers with particular reference to increase in salary, well equipped offices, provision of decent accommodation and transportation.
